Automotive power diodes are encapsulated in resin. This resin fulfills three functions. It is an electrical insulator. It shields the junction from moisture and other contaminants. It provides structural strength and dimensional stability to the assembly as a whole. As with all modern manufacturing processes, the performance of the resin as a raw material, as a manufacturing component and as a finished product, is constantly under investigation. This apparatus is used to replicate the manufacturing process when the diode is encapsulated with resin. The apparatus has all the functions of the production machine plus some extras. All can be modified under the laboratory conditions to try out new resins and processes.
